First came the BBC’s Ten Pieces scheme. Now, the ABRSM has announced its initiative aimed at introducing primary school children in England to classical music.
Launched today (2 November), the ABRSM’s ‘Classical 100’ is an online resource based on a list of 100 works that the organisation – which runs music exams in the UK – believes are ideal for sparking an interest in children aged five to 11 and then inspiring them to investigate further.
Covering nearly ten centuries of music, from Hildegard of Bingen (born 1098) to present-day composers such as Elena Kats-Chernin and Graham Fitkin, the list has been designed to introduce a wide range of music – not just from different periods, but also of different genres and styles. With the scheme supported by Decca and Classic FM, schools registering with the scheme can listen to recordings of the works in question and, in future, download other useful learning resources.
‘Classical 100 exemplifies ABRSM’s commitment to high quality music-making and learning and is representative of a new generation of digital resources,’ says the ABRSM’s chief executive Michael Elliott. ‘We all want to make a child’s first experience of music magical, the beginning of a rich and varied life-long journey.’
