Sterndale Bennett: Piano Concerto No. 4; Caprice in E major; Bache: Piano Concerto
Paderewski: Concerto for piano in Am; Polish Fantasia on original themes Op19
Marc-André Hamelin: No Limits - The World of the Piano, Vol. 2

Paderewski, the most famous pianist of his time, was also a serious composer who wrote a grand opera and a patriotic symphony. His Piano Concerto is an entertaining work in late-romantic style. It's not exactly a work of genius, but the charismatic, poetic, and virtuosic playing of Janina Fialkowska is enough to put it over the top. Fialkowska, a Canadian-born pianist, has recorded for RCA and CBC, but has never developed a major career. Her playing on this disc shows that she deserves one. The Polish Fantasy is a lot of fun, especially as Fialkowska plays it. The orchestra and conductor give her excellent support, and they also do well with the little-known concert overture. This disc may not be what we consider necessary music, but it provides enough enjoyment to justify its modest price. --Leslie Gerber - $3.49
Paderewski: Symphony in B Minor / Maksymiuk, et al
Moszkowski: Concerto for piano in E; Aus aller Herren Länder Op23
Ignace Paderewski Plays Beethoven, Liszt, Schubert, Debussy
Ludwig Thuille: Symphony; Piano Concerto

Paderewski portrays himself. The film includes a 21-minute recital (Chopin "Heroic Polonaise," Liszt "Hungarian Rhapsody," Beethoven "Moonlight,") + Paderewski "Minuet in G."
When Paderewski is playing, the camera mostly is trained on his face or hands, revealing details his records can't: You see that he keeps his fingers bent except for the pinkies, which he often holds straight. With the left hand he often strikes the lowest note first, the rest of the hand follows and then the right hand comes down.
His rhythms are flexible within a strict overall tempo. Serene playing. Casts a spell.

Harvest of Sorrow - Tony Palmer's Film About Sergei Rachmaninoff
Ignace Paderewski Plays Beethoven, Liszt, Schubert, Debussy
Wilhelm Kempff Plays Beethoven Piano Sonatas & Schumann (EMI Classic Archive 24)

Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1860-1941) was a Polish composer who wore many hats. Besides being an expert concert pianist and music teacher, he also managed to become the first prime minister of the newly independent Poland in 1919. His music is tonal and very Romantic, but it is also heavily influenced by the great European composers of the era. You will particularly hear shards of Elgar, Delius, and Bax. Listen even closer, and you'll even hear Nielsen and Sibelius floating in the background. Paderewski's Symphony in B minor owes much to the way Anton Bruckner structured his symphonies, but there is much less aimlessness and wandering about here. Recommended, especially if you are following the evolution of the symphony as it enters the 20th century. --Paul Cook - $17.70
