The September Cover CD features arias performed by the three great sopranos Maria Callas, Lucia Popp and Elisabeth Söderström.
The suffering diva: that is, perhaps, the single stereotype that springs most readily to mind when the subject of the operatic soprano is under consideration. The Greek-American Maria Callas specialised in operas with doomed, dying or exploited women at their epicentre, and on this month’s cover disc we have an excerpt from one of her most lacerating interpretations, the title part in Puccini’s opera Madam Butterfly. Slovakian soprano Lucia Popp was a highly versatile artist, who sang everything from Wagner to operetta. And the acclaimed Swedish soprano Elisabeth Söderström's charm, attention to detail and ripe tonal quality are typified in music by Musogsky, such as The Nursery, which can be heard on this disc.
