Who wrote 'Happy Birthday' and when was it written?
'Happy Birthday to You' (or 'Happy BIrthday') is now such a well-known tune that people think it's simply part of the canon of nursery rhymes. It's been translated into many languages and is sung regularly in many countries.
In actual fact, we're able to trace 'Happy Birthday' back to its origins. Its melody began life as a song called 'Good Morning to All', which was sung by Patty and Mildred J Hill in 1893 (but it's still not clear whether they composed it). It's believed that they thought the song would be easy for young children to sing. After some rather knotty disputes over copyright, the song is now in the public domain in both the US and the EU.
