The nominees for the 2024 Newcomer Award
Le Voyage
Songs by Bizet, Debussy, Koechlin, Ravel, Viardot
Alexandra Lowe (soprano), Patrick Milne (piano)
Champs Hill Records CHRCD169
Lowe and Milne were given ample room to showcase their respective talents in this appealing programme of French songs inspired by Greece, the Middle East and Spain. Milne was a sensitive accompanist to Lowe’s warm and expressive soprano voice, our original review noting her impressive command of the language.
Visages Baroques
Works by JS Bach, Rameau, Royer, Forqueray, Duphly
Raphaël Feuillâtre (guitar)
Deutsche Grammophon 486 4073
This debut saw French guitarist Raphaël Feuillâtre share not only his talent as a performer but also his skill as a transcriber in an ‘exquisite, joyfully presented programme’. Feuillâtre reframed works by JS Bach and French contemporaries, our review citing his ‘supple sensitivity’ and ‘formidable yet remarkably unshowy expressive power’.
Mirrors
Works by Ravel, Rachmaninov, Freya Waley-Cohen, Timo Andres, Unsuk Chin et al
George Xiaoyuan Fu (piano)
Platoon Music PLAT15459
Ravel’s Miroirs was the starting point for this breathtaking keyboard essay by American pianist George Xiaoyuan Fu. His intelligent approach to the music is fuelled by deep emotion and understanding of the wide variety of repertoire. That and Fu’s entrancing lightness of touch made for a memorable debut.
