The nominees for the 2024 Premiere Award
Missy Mazzoli
Dark With Excessive Bright; Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres); These Worlds in Us; Orpheus Undone
Peter Herresthal (violin); Arctic Philharmonic/Tim Weiss; Bergen Philharmonic/James Gaffigan
BIS BIS-2572
This was a thrilling showcase of orchestral works by New York-based composer Missy Mazzoli, performed by two Norwegian ensembles. At the album’s heart are two takes on Mazzoli’s evocative 2021 concerto Dark With Excessive Bright, originally penned for double bass, which sits among other notable premiere recordings.
Lutyens • Maconchy • Errollyn Wallen
Maconchy: Dialogue for Piano and Orchestra; Lutyens : Eos; Music for Piano and Orchestra; Errollyn Wallen: Piano Concerto*
Martin Jones, *Rebeca Omordia (piano); BBC Concert Orchestra/John Andrews
RES10315 RES10315
Works spanning decades made up this programme of premiere recordings, Maconchy’s 1941 Dialogue just as crucial and appealing an addition to the piano concerto repertoire as Errollyn Wallen’s own modern offering. As our review stated, these are ‘discoveries you’ll want to hear many times again’.
Sola – Music for Viola by Women Composers
Works by Amanda Feery, Sally Beamish, Thea Musgrave et al
Rosalind Ventris (viola)
Delphian DCD34292
This ‘altogether commendable album’ saw violist Rosalind Ventris explore overlooked solo repertoire written for her instrument by women composers in the 20th and 21st centuries, a good number of which recorded here for the first time. The result was something of a treasure trove, Ventris’s programme ‘beautiful, varied and enlightening’.
