The nominees for the 2024 Vocal Award
Lili Boulanger • Nadia Boulanger
Les heures claires – Complete Songs
Lucile Richardot (mezzo-soprano), Stéphane Degout (baritone) et al; Anne de Fornel (piano)
Harmonia Mundi HMM902356.58
There was ‘unalloyed pleasure’ to be found in this collection charting the complete songs of the Boulanger sisters, two composers whose output was brief but striking. Mezzo-soprano Lucile Richardot took on the lion’s share of the programme, accompanied with great flair by pianisr Anne de Fornel.
Beyond
Works by Monteverdi, Caccini, Frescobaldi, Kapsberger, Saracini, Netti, and Jarzębski
Jakub Józef Orliński (countertenor); Il Pomo d'Oro
Erato 5419772645
Polish countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński brought his now-trademark charm and energy to this thoughtfully curated programme of songs, cantatas and opera extracts, many by lesser-known Baroque composers. Orliński’s voice ‘pours out like liquid honey,’ according to our original review, while Il Pomo d’Oro provided a rich accompaniment.
Walking in the Dark
Works by John Adams, Samuel Barber et al
Julia Bullock (soprano); Philharmonia Orchestra/Christian Reif
Nonesuch 75597908176
‘Varied, accomplished and profoundly heartfelt’ was how our original review described this album from American soprano Julia Bullock. As talented a curator as she is a performer, Bullock assembled an enticing programme for this, delivering a ‘blazing’ rendition of John Adams’s aria ‘Memorial de Tlatelolco’ and a pair of Nina Simone classics.
