The nominees for the 2025 Choral Award
Mozart
Requiem
Pygmalion/Raphaël Pichon
Harmonia Mundi HMM902729
‘The Requiem is thrillingly served in all its theatrical grandeur, from the opening Introitus to a thrillingly punchy Dies Irae.’ That was our summing up of Raphaël Pichon and Pygmalion’s recording of Mozart’s unfinished masterpiece in the December issue. Theirs was a fresh and moving interpretation of an oft-recorded work.

Gabriela Ortiz
Revolución Diamantina
Los Angeles Master Chorale; LA Phil/Gustavo Dudamel
Platoon LAPHIL02
Gabriela Ortiz’s dazzling Revolución Diamantina was a standout work on this ‘Recording of the Month’ from the September issue. Originally a ballet score, the piece was inspired by the 2019 ‘Glitter Revolution’ in Mexico when thousands took to the streets in protest of police brutality against women. ‘A thing of wonder indeed,’ said our review.
Elgar
The Dream of Gerontius
Nicky Spence et al; Gabrieli Consort and Players/Paul McCreesh
Signum Classics SIGCD785
‘This is unquestionably a great recording of Gerontius, one that every Elgarian should have…’ High praise from our review of the July issue’s ‘Recording of the Month’. McCreesh and Gabrieli Consort’s take on Elgar’s great oratorio was highly anticipated and did not disappoint.
