The nominees for the 2025 Concerto Award
Beethoven
Triple Concerto
Sheku Kanneh-Mason (cello), Nicola Benedetti (violin), Benjamin Grosvenor (piano); Philharmonia Orchestra/Santtu-Matias Rouvali
Decca 485 4624
Our ‘Concerto Choice’ in July saw the talents of three brilliant young players come together with the Philharmonia and Santtu-Matias Rouvali for this performance of Beethoven's Triple Concerto. Their charisma shone brightly, our review saying, ‘together they make a stellar team, bursting with energy and expressive precision.’
Elgar
Violin Concerto
Vilde Frang (violin); Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin/Robin Ticciati
Warner Classics 2173240942
Elgar’s Concerto is a musical mountain and Norwegian violinist Vilde Frang scaled it with aplomb, securing our ‘Concerto Choice’ spot in December. It’s a work she had wanted to tackle for a long time, and her recording is up there with some of the very best. As our review said, ‘Anyone interested in Elgar, or in acutely insightful violin playing, should hear it.’
Grieg • R Schumann
Piano Concertos
Elisabeth Leonskaja (piano); Lucerne Symphony Orchestra/Michael Sanderling
Warner Classics 5419783783
‘Totally enlightening’ is our how our February review (the ‘Concerto Choice’) described Elisabeth Leonskaja’s performance of this pair of Romantic piano masterpieces by Grieg and Schumann. Approaching her 80th birthday this year, the Austrian pianist is making some of her best recordings of late; this one being full of insight and energy.
