The nominees for the 2025 Premiere Award

Re-Build

Works by Emily Hall, Ryan Latimer, Alex Paxton et al
Slide Action
NMC NMC D289

Reviewed Christmas 2024

‘The music unashamedly takes the listener through a kaleidoscope of circus tricks and sleights of hand…’ Such is the brilliant selection of new works for trombone quartet on this utterly brilliant concoction of an album by the boundary-pushing ‘Slide Action’, our Christmas issue ‘Recording of the Month’.

Adrian Sutton

Violin Concerto*; Five Theatre Miniatures; A Fistful of Fives; War Horse Suite; Short Story
*Fenella Humphreys (violin); BBC Philharmonic/Michael Seal
Chandos CHAN 20349

Reviewed December 2024

There was so much to enjoy in this showcase from British composer Adrian Sutton, whose Violin Concerto crowned a winning selection of deeply felt orchestral works. Fenella Humphreys deftly handled the concerto, described as ‘both athletic and lyrical’ in our December ‘Orchestral Choice’ review.

Emily Howard

The Anvil*; Elliptics**
*Kate Royal, **Claire Booth et al; BBC Singers; Hallé Choir; BBC Philharmonic/*Ben Gernon, **Vimbayi Kaziboni
Delphian DCD34285

Reviewed February 2024

Emily Howard’s The Anvil was a thrillingly immersive and deeply emotional commemoration of the 1819 Peterloo Massacre. Searingly brought to life by the combined forces of the BBC Philharmonic, BBC Singers and Hallé Choir, our February issue review called it simply ‘visceral and brilliant.’
