There seems to be a bit of a jazz buzz growing around the Marc Perrenoud Trio, which has recently performed a ‘sold-out’ set at London’s Ronnie Scott’s. Helmed by 30-year-old Perrenoud, this Swiss piano trio’s third disc should get nods of approval from fans of mainstream jazz while also revealing a subtle contemporary edge.
The album opens with a bluesy jazz groove on ‘Vestry Lamento’, while on ‘Madame Jojo’s’ Perrenoud uses a catchy and deceptively simple melody line that is impressively developed, as the track takes flight over a hard swinging rhythm. The intensive, angular jazz (that can overstay its welcome with some trios) gets a quirky look-in on ‘Bosendorfer Piano Club’, before the tranquil ‘Nympheas Blues’ brings the disc to a beautifully reflective close. Perrenoud demonstrates he is an experienced artist who knows what goes down
well with jazz audiences.
