Nielsen: Clarinet Concerto; Serenata in vano; Wind Quintet

Nielsen: Clarinet Concerto; Serenata in vano; Wind Quintet

Nielsen wrote his Quintet in 1922 as a portrait of the Copenhagen Wind Quintet, and their 1936 recording brings out the work’s relaxed charm, rough edges included. The earlier Serenata in vano is a typically whimsical creation. The Quintet’s clarinettist, Aage Oxenvad, died before he could record the concerto Nielsen wrote for him; the premiere recording came in 1947 with the more straight-laced Louis Cahuzac. Plenty of background noise on these transfers, but they’re worth it. Stephen Maddock
