Not the most famous Belgian-born
jazz musician, but Legnini has built
a tidy-sized discography since 1987,
when he cut his first album at 17.
This enjoyable release should earn
him a few more admirers.
In fact, Legnini is of Italian
extraction, as his surname might
suggest, and despite the Gallic
connections his playing often has a
distinct Latin/Mediterranean feel.
His main influences, though, are
the post-bop pianists that flourished
throughout the 1950s and early
1960s. These are acknowledged
by a couple of Phineas Newborn
compositions (including the excellent
‘Back Home’) and ‘Horace Vorace’,
his tribute to Mr Silver, but he is at his
most individual on subtle and elegant
reworkings of earlier standards, like
‘For all we know’ and ‘Prelude to a
Kiss’, which best demonstrate the
quality of his harmonic and timbral
imagination. Barry Witherden
