Georgia may be dirt-poor, but musically it’s fabulously rich: every village has its male-voice choir, singing in characteristic three-part polyphony. georgia: crossroads presents choirs and fine solo voices not heard on the international circuit; it also reflects Georgia’s Turkish-style flute music, and the ‘city songs’ which Stalin loved. But its packaging merely puffs other CDs on this budget label. There is nothing about the songs or the performers – even the title to Georgia’s best-loved song is misspelt. Michael Church.
