The Awards season is well underway, with the Golden Globes taking place a couple of weeks ago in Los Angeles. Next up is the EE BAFTA Film Awards, which take place on 16 February at London’s Royal Festival Hall, and both are looked at closely for hints as to who might take home a coveted Oscar at the Academy Awards in March.

Nominations for the Oscars are yet to be announced, delayed and voting extended due to the ongoing fires in Los Angeles. The nominees for this year’s BAFTAs, however, have just been announced.

The BAFTA for ‘Original Score’ (formerly known as ‘The Anthony Asquith Award for Film Music’) is the only music prize handed out by the British Academy, unlike the American Academy, and Golden Globes, which also award songs written for films.

This year’s nominees for ‘Original Score’ include a third BAFTA nomination for composer Volker Bertelmann, who took home the 2023 award for his score for All Quiet on the Western Front.

His score for multi-nominated Vatican drama Conclave was also nominated for a Golden Globe, though lost out to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s Challengers. That pair, who many will know from the band Nine Inch Nails are former Oscar winners (for The Social Network), but their high-octane music for the brilliant tennis drama isn’t included in the BAFTA list…

Joining Bertelmann is a clutch of first-time BAFTA nominees with scores composed across a variety of genres, including animation, musical and horror. Here’s the list in full…

Volker Bertelmann – Conclave

Camille and Clément Ducol – Emilia Pérez

Robin Carolan – Nosferatu

Daniel Blumberg – The Brutalist

Kris Bowers – The Wild Robot

The winners will be revealed at the EE BAFTA Film Awards on Sunday 16 February, which is being held once again at the Royal Festival Hall on London’s Southbank. Viewers in the UK can watch on BBC One and iPlayer.
