English National Opera (ENO) has announced the launch of a new mentoring scheme for an up-and-coming conductor.
The Charles Mackerras Fellowship, in association with the Philip Loubser Foundation, is a structured two-year programme during which the recipient will be mentored by ENO music director Edward Gardner. Sir Charles was music director at ENO from 1970-1977, during which time he became particularly remembered for introducing the operas of Janáček to a wider audience.
A shortlist of potential candidates is being drawn up in consultation with conservatoires and other leading music directors. A selection panel involving singers and the ENO orchestra will then lead an interview and audition process to select a conductor to embark on the programme at the beginning of the 2012/2013 season.
‘The programme will provide the recipient with a wonderful foundation in conducting while honouring the incredible legacy of Sir Charles Mackerras,' says Gardner. 'I am looking forward to first discovering that talent through this process, and then helping to nurture and encourage it.’
The winner of the award will be announced in April.
