Since launching in 1983, BBC Cardiff Singer of the World has become one of classical music’s most prestigious competitions.
We’re marking the occasion at BBC Music Magazine by giving all our readers a free DVD of highlights from the three decades of the competition.
The DVD includes winning performances by Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky, soprano Karita Mattila from Finland and Chinese bass-baritone Shenyang.
The most recent winner was Moldovan soprano Valentina Naforniţă who took both first prize and the audience prize with her performances of music from Dvořák’s Rusalka, Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor and Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette. Watch her performance of the Song to the Moon from Rusalka, above.
This year’s BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition takes place 17-23 June and will be broadcast on Radio 3 and BBC Four.
