Thomas Søndergård is to take over from Thierry Fischer as principal conductor of BBC National Orchestra of Wales (BBC NOW) from September next year.
Søndergård, who is currently principal conductor of the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, will begin a four-year term with BBC NOW in Autumn 2012.
He made his debut with the Welsh orchestra in December 2009 and will open the ensemble’s 2011/2012 season when he conducts a programme of Ravel, Messiaen and Debussy at St David’s Hall, Cardiff on 16 September. Cellist Steven Isserlis will join the orchestra to perform Saint-Saëns’s Cello Concerto No. 1.
David Murray, director of BBC NOW said: ‘In the short time we have worked together, Thomas has won over the Orchestra with his natural musicianship, dynamic drive and deep commitment.’
Søndergård himself said: ‘My debut with BBC NOW in 2009 was an amazing moment for me and I retain a vivid memory of the players’ involvement and sheer enthusiasm from the very first note.’
