COMPOSERS: Mozart
LABELS: Sony
WORKS: Violin Concerto No. 1 in B flat, K207; Violin Concerto No. 2 in D, K211
PERFORMER: Jaap Schröder (violin); Mozart-Ensemble Amsterdam/Frans Brüggen
CATALOGUE NO: SB2K 60110
Several of Mozart’s large-scale serenades contain miniature violin concertos (the concertante portion of the Serenade K203 even has its own key, strongly differentiated from that of the remainder of the work), and it’s an attractive enough idea to extract the relevant movements. Alas, these are rather leaden performances, sadly lacking in elegance or charm. The two actual violin concertos fare a good deal better, though it’s fair to say that period performance has generally improved in the quarter-century since these recordings were made. Misha Donat
